The big telcos have been furiously cutting deals in the developing world, but that doesn’t mean the gold rush is over. It’s only beginning. As large corporations supply the wireless infrastructure, there’s room for entrepreneurial companies to develop applications, provide content and services, and drive innovation. Many experts see wireless as the best way to broaden the reach of both voice and data telecommunications in these emerging regions. “Wireless data is an interesting game,” says Alan Sicher, manager of business development for wireless data at Ericsson. “The barriers to entry to are fairly low.”
The good news is communities across the country are beginning to wake up to the problem. Support groups for grandmothers are cropping up in every state, offering the women a forum to talk about their problems obtaining custody, health care, schooling and financial aid.
